Textiles - Day 3

In day three of textiles we carried on what we had already been doing working from our previous work again making observational drawings and layering them to create surface patterns. Colour schemes were very important therefore we had to experiment with ones we wanted to use in our sketch books as well as the materials.

Textiles - Day 1 and 2

The first day of textiles was very similar to some of the illustration taster as we focused on our observational drawing skills. We firstly working in our sketch books as a warm up we looked at different parts of a set-up of objects re-drawing them in various ways in different materials layering them.

We then did this again on collaged and white paper to experiment with materials.

We then progressed to print making working from our drawings.

With the mono printing we wanted to layer the different colour and experiment with surface pattern.

Queensbury Hunt

This piece has a textiles feel to it because of the patterns printed on the ceramic, the different plates layered together work well to make it look like  a form of 3D artwork as well as a practical object.

Again images printed on to ceramic, this print is one of my favourites from my research as the people clinging on to the edge is quite comical.

Rosenthal

The material here looks nothing like what you expect it making you think twice about it being an actual pot. It looks like a still from a video and is very surreal because these solid objects look like they are made from liquid.

Another Interesting surrealistic piece, the vases becoming the very thing you don't want them to be, smashed or broken. It's almost quite humorous as I imagine a viewer would be very shocked to see than the product had been damaged only to realize that it is supposed to be like that.

Applied Arts - Day 3

The third day revolved around ceramics. We looked at some different examples of clay such as terracotta and bone china, and also both mass produced products and one off pieces. We also researched Artists on the internet:

After this we made some quick thumb hole pots to get a feel for the material and then later we produced some coil pots out of clay.

Then we added white slip onto a slab of clay and made patterns and drawings from it by pulling away the slip off the surface of the clay.

At the end of the day we watched a clay throwing demonstration by on of the technicians which I really enjoyed.

Applied Arts - Day 1 and 2

I have paired the firs two days of applied arts together because on the first day other than theory we mainly went through health and safety. Our first task for the theory was to research one Artist from a list and put it in our sketch book.

On the second day we began to make our cube blocks, we did this by creating different tester pieces from the techniques we had been taught in the health and safety walk through on the first day. My favourite machine in the workshop would probably be the fly press, I really liked making indentations in the metal and creating interesting patterns.

^ This is my favourite side on the block, the tester I created out of steel came out the best out of them all I think. I twisted some wire into some random patterns and placed it on to the metal then used the fly press to press the pattern on to the steel. Then I burnt the metal to create interesting colours on it, it reminded me of reptiles skin.

Photography - Day 2

In the second day of photography we were told we would be looking at observational photography. We were told to look for a few different things such as colour and juxtaposition and make sure we always considered composition as we weren't aloud to crop our images in the editing process. We were given some digital cameras and sent out for most of the day in to chesterfield to take photographs, I took some on my iPhone and my partner on the camera so we got a bigger range of photographs, here's a slideshow of our best 15 images.
